From soldier to employee
A lot of veterans struggle with what they want to do after they leave the military. I was fortunate to begin my work at GDIT alongside two great individuals with whom I had worked with during my military career. They described the opportunities at GDIT, and since I trusted and respected them, it was an easy decision for me to join the company.
My managers at GDIT further supported my transition into a civilian career, providing me with mentorship in how to transfer my leadership skills into a new environment. They also helped me focus my energies into my passions, which led to my involvement in HONOR, GDIT’s Employee Resource Group (ERG) for veterans.

HONOR focuses on building a community of veterans by supporting military members transitioning into the civilian workforce at GDIT as well as veterans who are already part of the company.
For military veterans transitioning into GDIT, we offer a mentorship program to mentor and guide them as they make the shift into the civilian workforce.
As a co-leader of HONOR, I get to participate in employer panel discussions, which gives me the chance to talk to military veterans making the transition to the civilian workforce. One of the big things I try to impress upon them about GDIT is that you can really be yourself here. You can find a career that suits your skill set and career goals. Finding community
For veterans who are already part of GDIT, HONOR tries to build connections and create a collaborative, welcoming community—through activities like charity work outings, guest speaker events, and monthly virtual chats.
I was able to participate in a collaboration event with our Faith and Hope ERG where we had a program in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. We have a colleague whose father wrote a book about surviving a work camp during the Holocaust, and he talked about the book and his father’s experiences. It was one of the most meaningful events I have attended at GDIT.
Being a member—and now a co-leader—of the HONOR ERG has enabled me to give back to the veteran community, and it has been personally and professionally rewarding to stay connected with my fellow veterans.
